YVR must comply with Federal Aviation Regulations about vegetation control with an international airport. We have been providing vegetation control for 25 years to the airport. This includes:
- All runways, taxiways and aprons
- All taxi, approach and runway lights
- All airside signage
- All fence lines
- Airside building lines
We have also done extensive tree preventative work including:
- Dormant spraying
- Fertilizing
- Watering
- Disease identification and treatment
- Insect control
We have done slashing:
- Clearing a 3km section with the removal of over 3000 trees
- Multiple fence line clearings
- Blackberry removals
Other controls:
- Lawn insect control
- Crane fly control airside to reduce bird strikes with aircraft
- Lawn fertilizers
- Noxious and invasive weed control
- Road and boulevard vegetation control
- Non-herbicide control
Working extensively with YVR’s environmental department we have reduced the amount and number of chemicals used at the airport. YVR’s continuous monitoring of all surface water runoff from the airport provides feedback and now shows almost no herbicides in the runoff. This has helped YVR gain “Salmon Safe” certification.
