Japanese Knotweed was discovered in three locations at 12788 King George Blvd, which posed a threat to the local ecology and ongoing construction activities for RDM Enterprises. To mitigate this risk, a full removal was deemed necessary, given time constraints associated with the construction project. The plants were present along the perimeter of a building wall, which presented additional risks during excavation activities. A geomembrane root barrier was considered for a cost-effective approach, however it was impractical due to potential soil disruption during the future installation of light poles.
Western Weed Control (WWC) promptly began creating a management plan to commence the project within two weeks of inquiry. The WWC team of vegetation control experts, an excavator operator, and a dump truck, were present on site for the treatment and removal of the infested areas. They used a comprehensive approach, excavating rhizomes (roots) up to 2 meters deep underground to ensure the job was completed thoroughly. A total of approximately 41 tonnes of excavated material was carefully removed from the site via dump truck to a disposal facility.
The project was carried out successfully over a period of three days, with a strong focus on safety and environmental responsibility. Overall, the effective removal of the Japanese Knotweed infestation by WWC, prevented future spread in the area and allowed RDM Enterprises to carry out the completion of their construction project.

- Business Type: A full service contractor offering excavation, site preparation to final grade, and project management services
- Location: 2300 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver
Japanese Knotweed was identified in two locations at 2300 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver in early July 2022. Both groups were located along the Northern perimeter of the site (Figure 1) and appeared to be recently established of less than two weeks at the time. The plants posed a threat to the local ecology and ongoing construction activities for RDM Enterprises. To mitigate this risk, herbicide treatment was deemed necessary prior to removal.
