Japanese knotweed removal

Intracorp Homes

Japanese knotweed infestations were discovered at 1511 W 47th Ave, Vancouver, threatening Intracorp Homes’ construction operations. To address this risk and meet construction deadlines, a full removal of the knotweed was required.

Western Weed Control (WWC) quickly developed a management plan to start the project promptly. The plan included pre-removal herbicide treatment to ensure effective eradication. In June 2024, herbicide was applied to all affected areas, as shown in Figure 1. However, knotweed in the red zone (Figure 1) could not be physically removed due to a protected tree habitat. In July 2024, WWC’s experts, along with an excavator operator and dump trucks, carried out the removal in the yellow zone (Figure 1). This involved excavating roots up to 3 meters deep and transporting the material to a disposal facility.

The project was successfully carried out with a strong focus on safety and environmental responsibility. Overall, the effective removal of the Japanese knotweed by WWC prevented future spread in the area and allowed Intracorp Homes to proceed with the construction project.
